You can now use the iPhone Dev Team tool redsn0w to safely upgrade to 3.1.3 without losing your jailbreak. But there are a few exceptions.

This was posted by the Dev Team on their blog; treat it as gold.

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware.  This is no exception.  If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia.  That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom.  If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

3.1.3 doesn’t bring much advantage, but if you’re really into keeping your jailbroken iPhone up to date, redsn0w is the way to go.

Before you hit that Upgrade button, STOP! That is a button of evil and will break your jailbreak.

Until a safe upgrade tool is released, DO NOT UPGRADE TO 3.1.3 IF YOU STILL LIKE YOUR JAILBREAK!

That is all.

Today, iModiPhone will show you how to use an unlocker called blacksn0w to tether your 3.1.x iPhone! Read more… »

Important announcement

We’re announcing that iMiP is turning its focus away from regular iPhone news, and simply focusing on jailbreaking news, leaks, and guides.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but it’s too hard for me to constantly update the site with new news.

My friend Justin Daigle posted a guide on how to modify your iPhone/iPod Touch’s legal page to whatever pleases you.

WARNING: iModiPhone.com and Justin Daigle do NOT take responsibility in case you somehow ruin your device.

Requirements:

1. A jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch. If you don’t know how to do this… this guide probably isn’t for you. While the file you’ll be modifying isn’t actually important, I still wouldn’t recommend you screw around with your system files if you don’t know how to jailbreak.

2. A file browser with some means of modifying files, such as iFile.

3. A basic knowledge of HTML.

Directions:

1. Navigate to /Applications/Preferences.app in iFile or another iPhone file browser of your choice, as long as it allows you to open files as text and save them.

2. BACK UP the acknowledgements-ipod.html or acknowledgements-iphone.html file. (see below)

3. Open acknowledgements-ipod.html (iPod Touch) or acknowledgements-iphone.html (iPhone; untested) as text in your file browser.

4. Use common sense to edit the file based on the formatting already used.

5. Save the file.

6. Enjoy!

Ouch. Apple has made a statement about the recent viruses that have hit the iPhone. They said if you jailbroke in the first place, it’s your fault for catching the viruses.

They said that those who caught the virus clearly jailbroke their iPhones, of which Apple is extremely disapproving. They’ve even filed to the DMCA to make jailbreaking illegal.

Me? I completely disapprove of Apple’s claim. Jailbreaking your iPhone itself does nothing to damage the iPhone. The virus is caught by users of OpenSSH who haven’t changed the default ‘alpine’ password. But of course, Apple won’t accept that fact. Oh well.

So jailbreakers, continue to watch for the viruses…and CHANGE YOUR DEFAULT SSH PASSWORD!

Jailbreakers beware! A new iPhone worm is out, and it targets your jailbroken iPhones.

Just like the ikee virus, this new worm targets iPhone who run SSH and whose users haven’t changed the default password for their SSH, which is ‘alpine’. But this new worm isn’t as harmless as changing your background to Rick Astley; this worm actually steals your information and opens backdoors that a hacker can use to take complete control of your iPhone. The worm phones home and hands over information about the user, including contacts, SMS messages, and more. It also assigns each infected iPhone with a unique ID and phones home with that. Symantec calls the worm iPhoneOS.Ikee.B, while Intego calls the worm iPhone/iBotnet.A.

To prevent the virus from affecting you, change your default SSH password. Make it something you can remember, but that is easy to guess. Never store your SSH password on your iPhone unencrypted.

If you do have the worm, plug your iPhone into your computer and run Symantec for Windows and Intego VirusBarrier X5 for Mac. You can also remove the virus by wiping your device via Restore in iTunes.

The Birdfeed Twitter client is probably one of the best Twitter apps for iPhone. It costs $2.99[iTunes link] and is well worth the money.

It’s been updated to version 1.2. Here are some new features, provided by The iPhone Blog:

  • Geographic locations can now be attached to posted tweets using Twitter’s new Geo API, and a tweet’s location, if present, will now be displayed as a place name (e.g. “Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, New York”) in the tweet detail view. Tweet locations can also be examined in a new map view.
  • Flickr accounts can now be used as photo sharing services for
  • New photo posting sheet allows larger versions of photos to be examined before they are posted, and for metadata (such as title, description, and tags) to be entered.
  • Settings for location posting, photo sharing, and URL shortening are now located inside the app, and can be specified on a per-account basis. Additionally, the local tweet cache can be cleared for each account from its settings screen.
  • The Direct Messages Inbox now has a toolbar with refresh and mark all read buttons.
  • Mentions can now be marked as read simply by tapping into their detail view from the main timeline.
  • Favstar.fm and Tweeteorites have been added to the profile services menu.

I went ahead and downloaded it, and it’s looking really nice so far. A few glitches and bugs here and there, like the app freezing up once in a while, but looks really clean and, in my opinion, runs better than my previously used client, EchoFon.
